California's oldest operating dairy farm, Giacomazzi Dairy, has ditched milking cows to focus on growing almonds instead. This is a huge pivoting moment for the dairy farm as they have been in the dairy milk business for the past 125 years!!
Why the Change of Heart?
According to Giacomazzi Dairy owner Dino Giacomazzi, “Over the last five years, it’s been very difficult to make money in the dairy industry." Giacomazzi tells ABC, that as the demand for plant-based milk continues to grow, sales for the milk industry has been plummeting. 😯
Fellow dairy farmer Cornell Kasbergen also chimed in to say, "You’re better off putting your money into trees … almonds, pistachios, grapes. There’s a lot of alternatives that provide a higher return than milking cows.” (louder for the people in the back 👏🏼👏🏼)
To add to this, 500 dairy farms that have closed in California in the last ten years as demand for milk consumption disappears.
What's Next for Giacomazzi Dairy
Currently, they have 400 acres of almond trees planted and are planning to expand with 900 more acres in the coming years. Giacomazzi says, “we’ve chosen to commit the rest of our property to grow almond trees and we’re going to sell the cows and become almond farmers.”
