For starters, let's cover what protein even is and why you need it.
Protein is made of long chains of amino acids. Amino acids are organic acids made up of a carboxyl functional group (-COOH) and an amine functional group (-NH2), as well as a side chain (designated as R) that is specific to the individual amino acid.

Your body uses these amino acids (protein) to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. Protein is also an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood.
But listen up: there are 9 essential amino acids that your body CANNOT produce, therefore you need to eat them. So, we get why people are concerned. In order to get these 9 essential amino acids, make sure you are eating a variety of foods in your diet - eat the rainbow! But let's talk about how many grams of protein you actually need.
The amount of protein you need all depends on your weight, physical activity and more. To keep it simple, multiply your weight by 0.36 grams to find the amount of protein grams needed for someone who is sedentary or lightly active. This number is your DRI or Dietary Reference Intake.
