Plant-based burgers at McDonald's? Is this relationship goals?
With Beyond Meat and Impossible burger partnering with fast-food chains across America, we think McDonald's is overdue for plant-based burgers in the U.S. That may soon change due to talks about a vegan Big Mac appearing at McDonald's. Imagine a chargrilled vegan patty (cooked on a separate grill) paired with a vegan version of McDonald's sesame seed bun and special sauce... yum. 😋
Dreams do come true because a little bird (aka Chicago Business) told us that McDonald's has been working with OSI Group — a McDonald’s meat supplier — and Impossible Foods to make plans to introduce meatless burger options in the company’s U.S.-based restaurants.
This should come at no surprise though. McDonald's has already ventured in the plant-based food space with vegan options around the world. In 2017, they introduced the McVegan burger in Finland and Sweden. Then, in 2019, they launched vegan goujons and vegan happy meals in their UK locations. Recently, they brought a vegan sandwich to Israeli locations too! America, where you at?
The last few years have been a huge win for the plant-based fast-food space. Fast-food chains continue to add vegan meat options to their menu items. Burger King, White Castle, Carl's Jr., Dunkin' Donuts, and most recently, KFC. (Have you heard about the Beyond Fried Chicken?). Plant-based options aren't just attracting vegan customers — purchases for vegan options seem to come from meat-eaters too. We think if a large fast-food-chain like McDonald's begins to carry a meatless option it would definitely change that game, big time.
We're definitely keeping a close eye. 😏
